No, of course you don’t want your customers to return their widgets. If they do that, you’ll have to….gulp….give their money back.

Oh no!

But face it, it does happen. No matter how well you describe your dropship products, or how wonderful the photos you took instead of using the stock photos, or how great the widget really is; there will be those who want to send it back. Return it. Get a refund.

So, knowing that this is going to happen from time to time, the best thing to do is embrace it. Make it work for you. Because the fact of the matter is that you are more likely to convert a shopper to a buyer if you do offer a generous return policy.

Shoppers Like Return Policies

Internet research has shown that shoppers like return policies. If you look at it from their point of view, this is understandable. After all, they’re online, shopping in a virtual world where they’re unable to actually see or touch the product you’re asking them to buy.

It’s a leap of faith and one that is made easier by having a great return policy. The odds are in your favor that a shopper who becomes a customer won’t ever use the return policy, but it’s a security blanket that can tip the scales in your favor and convince the shopper to buy from you.

Tips for a Better Return Policy

Here are some tips to help you spruce up your return policy:

  • Be sure that you have posted info about your return policy where shoppers can easily see it. Don’t try putting it in fine print or some obscure corner of your site or auction listing because it makes it look like you’re trying to hide it, and if those tactics sound familiar to you; you probably are trying to hide it. Don’t do that! Bring your return policy out of the closet! Let it shine!

  • Allow customers sufficient time to return a product. Again, this increases an online shopper’s feeling of security about buying from you. Many big box retailers are offering extended return times and have made the startling discovery that far from encouraging returns; their return rate went down while sales went up. Imagine that! If it worked for Zappos with a 365 day return policy, it might work for you as well.

  • Use plain old English instead of some stilted, legal-speak that seems designed to confuse shoppers and cloud the issue. People are naturally mistrustful of this type of obfuscation and who could blame them? Spell your return policy out in words that can be easily understood by all.

Those tips will help you make your return policy shopper friendly and that’s the whole idea, right? Making it easier for people to buy your dropship products?
