Based on the findings of a survey of US web retailers by the e-tailing group and PowerReviews that was conducted in August and September 2009, three-quarters of those surveyed said that they believed brands were increasing their use of social media marketing. 

In fact, more than half of web e-tailers surveyed are using 5 or more of the 10 social media tools on the internet, and many more entrepreneurs said that they have plans to jump on the social media marketing bandwagon.

Here are the ten social media tools currently in use by web retailers:

Of the social media tools listed above, Facebook fan pages are the most popular, followed by Twitter and then customer reviews.

Despite the growing popularity and use of social media tools, some ecommerce entrepreneurs are held back by fear of using it incorrectly, and possibly losing control of their own brand as a consequence.

But, even if you feel a little intimidated by social media marketing---go for it!

You have more to lose by not using the social media tools available for your online dropshipping business than by forging ahead.

The survey also showed that a lot of internet retailers are worried that they will lose customers to a competitor who is more socially engaging. This is a very real possibility! Consumers want to interact! 

So, even if you find the whole process sort of scary, do use social media marketing or risk being left behind.

According to a 2009 Powered Inc. survey, customers are 65% more likely to purchase brands they hear about through social media.
