Content is King: Writing User Friendly Content for eCommerce

Content is king, that is the axiom concerning ecommerce and the World Wide Web, and it’s correct.

So, if your writing isn’t up to par, then your content won’t be either, if you are doing all of the writing for your ecommerce website.

Even experienced writers can benefit from a short refresher course or consciously brushing up their writing skills every now and then, especially when it comes to writing content for an ecommerce website.

Here are a few tips that might help you write better content for your online business:

  • There is an elementary, very basic piece of information about internet users that it would behoove you to bear in mind when writing content for your website: Online viewers do not read, they merely scan. So, it is imperative that you get straight to the point without beating around the bush or taking any detours. Subtlety and nuance don’t belong in your web content! Be brief, and be explicit, as quickly as possible!
  • Make sure that you provide a very brief summarization of your content right up front. For example, if you are selling a revolutionary new mousetrap that is the best on the market due to some super improvement, such as a mousetrap that removes the dead mouse and disposes of it for you---then try to convey that selling point before going into the whole spiel about the features of the mousetrap. Your content should have a “hook” right away that will catch a user’s interest and make him or her want to continue reading.
  • Remembering that online viewers scan the page instead of reading it, per se, keep your sentences and paragraphs short. When you do this, you can more or less lead the viewer down the page, with a minimum of effort on the part of the reader.
  • Make it a practice to limit your thoughts to one per paragraph. If you try to cram too much information into one paragraph, it’s confusing for viewers and you will lose their attention.
  • Use bullet points, headers and lists to break up the monotony of the printed page, and to hold a viewer’s attention. Besides being attention getters and holders, these will also serve to help keep your content well organized.
