A Handy Guide to eCommerce Niche Finding

In order to be successful in ecommerce, you must adhere to the old law of supply and demand, and find a profitable niche where there is a big enough demand to build a thriving online business.

So, how do you find a profitable niche like that?

It isn’t easy. When you are in the planning stages of starting an ecommerce business and trying to decide what products to sell, you can’t do it with a hit or miss attitude.

Finding a good niche isn’t like playing Pin the Tail on the Donkey, where you stumble around blindfolded and try to hit your target.

You could go through a lot of internet businesses and fail spectacularly at every last one if you used such a slapdash approach to deciding on a niche.

Instead, you must research.

It’s fairly boring, it’s time consuming and you might get utterly sick of it before you are finished, but it simply must be done. If you want to have a thriving, successful ecommerce business, then you must take the necessary steps to determine the best niche.

How do you go about discovering a great niche for your online business?

There are five basic principles that you must apply to finding a suitable niche:

1. Choose a product that you are at least semi-knowledgeable about, and one that you are truly passionate about---something you believe in, that you can sell with the satisfaction of knowing you are providing something of value to your customers. It’s vitally important that you believe in what you are selling! If you don’t, people will flag you as a phony and you will lose their trust there and then. Believe it.

2. Find a niche with a sufficient demand to provide you with a nice income. You must decide how much money you absolutely have to make. This is, of course, totally subjective according to your want and needs. But, regardless of how meager or lavish an income will suffice for you, make sure you choose a niche that will support that monetary goal.

3. If a niche has too many competitors, stay out of it. Unless you have developed some new and improved version of a better mousetrap---don’t try to muscle your way into a niche that is already overcrowded with competition. Bad idea.

4. Make sure that besides being in demand, the niche you choose will have a sufficient potential for profit. In other words, if you researched and learned that there is a huge demand for muffin pans, but you would only realize a profit of a dollar or so after all your expenses….forget it. It’s possible to have a very low profit margin and still make buckets of money, but you would have to sell in tremendous volume to do that. Since chances are that you are the only one working at your business, do you really want to work 20 hours a day, 7 days a week trying to fulfill orders to make a few hundred dollars? Probably not. So, choose a niche with a decent profit margin.

5. Once you choose your niche, set about building your brand! Use social media marketing, email marketing and every other sort of marketing to own your niche!

Choosing the right niche is critical to your ecommerce success!
