Dropship Tips: A Beginner's Guide to SEO for Ecommerce

If you are a brand new entrepreneur with a home dropship business or other ecommerce endeavor, you might appreciate getting some basic SEO tips to help you get started in the world of online sales!

What is SEO?

SEO stands for “Search Engine Optimization.”

Why is it important to have Search Engine Optimization?

In a nutshell, if the search engines such as Google can’t find you, then neither will anybody else, including customers. There are all sorts of things that an online business in dropship sales can probably do without, but having customers is not one of them!

There is a saying that is familiar to most ecommerce business people: If you don’t exist with Google---you don’t exist.

And that’s about the size of it.

So, to make sure that the search engines can find your business or your dropship products, you must use SEO.

First and foremost, it is important that you have a working knowledge of keywords.

What are keywords?

Keywords are the words or phrases used by internet users when they are searching for a particular thing on the World Wide Web. For example, if you wanted to buy a pet bed online, you would probably type the words “pet bed” into the Google search box, or the search box of whichever search engine you use. So “pet bed” is a keyword phrase, and if you were selling pet beds, this would certainly be your prime keyword that you would use for SEO.

Where do you need keywords?

• In your title: Your page title is crucial and should always contain at least one of your most relevant keywords.

• In your URL: Always try to have a URL with your best keyword/s. For instance, if you are selling Christmas decorations, you should have something like www.bestchristmasdecorations.com or something similar. If you are selling a specific type of Christmas decorations such as wreaths, then use the words “Christmas wreath” in your URL if at all possible. This will net you better targeted traffic, which will help your conversion rate, which will help your ranking in SERPs, or Search Engine Results Pages.

• In your content: A rule of thumb is that your keywords should comprise approximately 5-7% per 500 words. Don’t go over 10% or you will be cooking your proverbial goose with Google because that is known as “Black Hat SEO” and that’s a bad thing that can get you blacklisted with Google and other major search engines.

There are other important places to use SEO and great keywords, but those will get you started and will help drive traffic to your dropship business!
