dropship home businessIt is almost the end of another year, which means tax time is almost upon us and you will soon need to start getting your ducks in a row to make sure you get all of the deductions and write-offs you are entitled to for your dropship business.

There are all sorts of great tax tips out there, but if this is your first year with an ecommerce business, you might need to work on the basics.

Here are some tried and true tips that should help you with tax time for your home dropship business:

  • As a general rule---don’t incorporate. In most cases for ecommerce entrepreneurs with small businesses, incorporating merely loads you down with a lot of very complicated paperwork and forms that you don’t need. If you are concerned about legal liability issues for some reason, you can set up a one owner limited liability company that will be considered as a sole proprietor set up for tax purposes.

  • Don’t overlook allowable expenses that are incurred in running your home business. In most cases, you may deduct a certain percentage of your rent or mortgage, utilities including phone and internet service, fax service or costs, expenses associated with maintaining a web site, office furniture and supplies, etc. etc. You might be surprised to discover how many legal allowances you may claim when you have your own business!

  • Many ecommerce business people do not have group health insurance and must purchase it privately. At least a portion of the cost of this private insurance is an allowable expense.

  • Ditto for retirement plans. What you are paying for a self retirement plan is deductible up to a certain amount every year. You can check on the allowable deduction for a self funded retirement plan at the IRS website.

  • If you use a personal vehicle in conjunction with running your business, there are several allowable and deductible expenses such as repairs, mileage, insurance and more.

In many cases, it is a good idea to hire a professional to help you with your home business taxes for a dropship business because a pro can often find deductions you might miss!
