Sporting goods chain stores pulled in an impressive $537M this January, a 13% increase over January 2011. Both units sold and average retail-selling prices increased 6%. All major categories contributed to the month’s gains.

Comparing this January to last, apparel gained 13% to total $228M. Sportswear and licensed apparel enjoyed double-digit dollar growth, up 19% and 21%, respectively. Cold weather categories suffered through the warm January weather. Outerwear, pulling in $9.6M, slipped 6% while base layer slid a more modest 3% to total $36M at retail.
Footwear gained 17% over last January to total $195M this month.

Running shoes, with $138M in retail sales, increased 13%. Cross trainers did particularly well, up 89% with nearly $26M in sales. Casual shoes were also a hot category this January gaining 40% and pulling in $9.6M.”

This is a very large niche and you might decide to drill down within the niche to find and develop a lucrative sub-niche. For example, looking at the factoids above, we see that in the sporting goods category clothing has a significant increase in sales.

So, you may want to concentrate your efforts on clothing within the sporting goods niche.
